Lightning FM is winding down.

The hosted parts of Lightning FM go offline on 2026-09-28. Your catalog, your keys and your money do not. Here is what changes and what to do before then.

What is shutting down

On 2026-09-28 we switch off relay.lightning.fm, media.lightning.fm, the station stream, and every hosted service the desktop app talks to: the name directory at /.well-known/nostr.json, the LNURL resolver, and hosted checkout. The app itself will still open, but uploads, names and the station will fail. hello@lightning.fm stays reachable until the domain lapses.

What survives

Your tracks are kind 31337 Nostr events signed by your own key. We never held that key, so we cannot revoke the events and neither can anyone else. Republish them to any relay and they carry on, signatures intact, without our permission or our servers.

The desktop app, the artist node and the MCP server were published under the MIT license. Any copy you already hold stays yours to run, fork and point at your own relay.

How to export

There is no export button in the desktop app; it only backs up your key. The catalog is plain Nostr data, so you fetch it the same way any client does. Query relay.lightning.fm for kind 31337 events by your npub with any Nostr client or a tool like nak, and save the raw JSON. Each event carries the sha256 of its audio file; download that blob from media.lightning.fm/<sha256> before 2026-09-28. The wire format is documented at /interop.

Your keys, wallet and money

Every sale paid straight into your own wallet. Your key never left your machine. Nothing here needs to be withdrawn, transferred or claimed, because we never had it. That was the point.
